Woodpeckers vs Hawk
We had a pair of downie woodpeckers nest in a small, but old apple tree in our orchard this spring. There were two babies, a boy and a girl. Their plaintive cries for food kept both adults very busy delivering beakfulls of insects. One afternoon a young goshawk came swooping down to land on top of the tree, only two feet from the woodpecker cavity, obviously hunting. I was able to get one clear photo of the hawk before it left. We never saw the babies fledge, but they did occupy the nest through an unseasonable cold snap, including hail. The next day they were gone.
